Ironically, I just saw Jennifer Hudson on Oprah today and boy does she look fabulous! She has gone from a size 16 to a size 6 on the Weight Watchers New PointsPlus Program. She talked about making exercise fun. Where have I heard that before? :) I am inspired to join Weight Watchers…..again, but can I stay motivated beyond a couple of weeks? That is the question.

PointsPlus

On the new PointsPlus program, each member receives a personalized daily PointsPlus value. PointsPlus values are calculated for foods based on their protein, fiber, fat, and carb. content. The formula takes into account how these substances are processed by the body, for a complete picture of a food’s impact on weight loss.  Fresh fruit and vegetables have no points.

The Review – Smoky Turkey Chili

I was excited to prepare a couple of recipes from the book for this review. First up, a slow cooker recipe – Smoky Turkey Chili. The book contains a new chapter of all slow-cooker classics recipes like Corned Beef and Cabbage, Chicken and Turkey Sausage Gumbo and Manhattan Clam Chowder, to name just a few.  As far as this cook is concerned, there is nothing like an easy slow cooker recipe.

There are actually a few ingredients in this recipe that I have never used to make chili before and they are: ketchup, small white beans (I typically use black beans or kidney beans), honey, instant espresso and hickory liquid smoke.

The best part about this recipe is that you do not have to brown the turkey, onions, garlic and peppers first – just throw them all in and combine. Next, throw in the rest of the ingredients and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours.

The Smoky Turkey Chili was very hearty (with all those beans) and tasty. It was easy to put together too. The serving size is 1 1/4 cup and the PointsPlus value is 5 points.  For those counting calories, a serving is 232 calories.  Grant and I enjoyed this chili and I would make it again. I thought it was a little too sweet, so I would cut back on the honey and the ketchup next time.

The Review – Mahogany Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

What I like about Weight Watchers is that nothing is off limits, as long as you count your points.  When I saw the Mahogany Velvet Cupcakes, I had to try them out.

What could that be? Some creamed butter and sugar with some red food coloring? No, not quite. Those are pureed beets! Traditionally, red velvet cupcakes get their deep red color from a hefty amount of red food coloring. But remember, these are Weight Watchers cupcakes – so they made them a little healthier by adding beets to the recipe – no kidding!

Here’s a look at the batter once all of the ingredients were combined.

The frosting recipe calls for fat-free cream cheese, confectioner’s sugar and grated lemon zest. So how did they taste?

I love ‘em and they love ‘em! I guess that’s one way I can get them to eat some veggies! Honestly, you will not taste the beets.  I actually don’t like beets at all, so if there was any hint of beet taste I would not like this recipe.  Each cupcake has 6 points, 234 calories.

This cookbook has over 400 pages of recipes – including breakfasts, main dishes, soups, salads, pizza, fish, grain and bean sides, vegetable sides, desserts and more.     I have not been following the new program, but intend to start. I know one of the big pluses of the new program is the low points value of fruit, but I am more a veggie person, and so will be loading up on the veggies. I may try to figure out the new values of my usual green smoothie, as that is one of the few times when I don’t mind consuming fruit ;)
